Competition rules
Version 0.1, draft. Organisers may change these rules before the qualifier opens, and will publish any change here. They apply to the remote qualifier unless stated otherwise.
Who can take part
- Students registered on this platform under a school, either added by a teacher or self-registered with the school code a teacher shares.
- Students sign in with their own email or a parent's. Students in one family may share an email.
- A student's year comes from their birth year. Year 1 is the calendar year a child turns 7. Teachers can correct it, for example for a student who started school early, and the change stays visible.
- The year sets the band: Primary is Year 1 to 6, and Secondary is Year 7 (Form 1) and above.
- Each school has a state (Malaysian states and Federal Territories), used for state rankings.
Teachers at a school can correct or remove any student on their list, close registration, or change the school code.
Practice
- Practice is available without an account, and is never ranked.
- Practice results are not saved yet.
Official attempts
- A maximum of 2 attempts per student in each official event window.
- An attempt is used as soon as the student presses Show passage, even if they then leave.
- Everyone in a band gets the same passage for that event.
- Backspace is allowed. Paste is blocked.
- Scores are calculated on the server.
How scores are measured
- Net WPM: speed counting correctly typed characters. This is the main ranking measure.
- Gross WPM: speed counting all typed characters.
- Accuracy: the percentage typed correctly.
Ranking order
- Meet the accuracy floor for the band (currently proposed: Primary 90%, Secondary 95%).
- Higher net WPM.
- Higher accuracy.
- Earlier time when that best valid score was achieved.
Results that are flagged, cancelled, or from people who aren't registered students are excluded.
State finalists
After the window closes, organisers take the top students in each state and band. Organisers set the number, based on the practice keyboards available, and those students are invited to the physical final.
Physical final
- A new passage, typically with 1 official attempt on site.
- The same approach to scoring.
- Travel and accommodation are generally the family's responsibility, unless a sponsor covers them.
Fee
A token fee of RM8 per student applies. Organisers will announce how to pay.
